Gallery: Grand Arcade construction

This gallery was last updated on Wednesday 23rd May 2007.

The Grand Arcade, a new shopping centre in Cambridge, will include a new cycle park and cycle contraflow, both in Corn Exchange Street. Unfortunately this is the wrong side of the development.

Buildout presumably being created for the new cycle contraflow being created following pressure by the Campaign. Probably about the best position that could be achieved given bureaucratic restrictions by the DfT. I don't see where the 'new' cotraflow lane in CornExchange St is going?
from 'build-out' gap to otherside must be well under 4m? Works round the back of the Grand Arcade, where a new cycle contraflow will be installed. Fisher Square, under reconstruction due to the Grand Arcade. The cycle parking here has been removed and will not return. New contraflow in Corn Exchange Street being built, but with a ludicrously large buildout which should instead have been used to widen the cycle path. Corn Exchange St.
A dangerous use of speed cushions.
A gap of at least 750 mm (preferably > 1m) is needed between the edge of the cushion and the kerb to allow cyclists to bypass safely without risk of hitting the side ramps and being destabilised. … Entrance to the new car parking. To the right is the new contraflow in Corn Exchange Street being built, but with a ludicrously large buildout which should instead have been used to widen the cycle path. Space ready for the cycle contraflow lane, won after a hard fight by the Cycling Campaign. Contraflow and entrance to Grand Arcade cycle park taking shape.
