12021Photo #12021Cycle parking at Assen station. There really are quite a lot of bikes here for a city of 63000 people. Play the video to get an idea of how many. Not all the bikes are in this park - there is another similar cycle park on the opposite side of the station.

The amount of cycle parking here is considered to be inadequate and is being increased to 2300 places. That's one for every twenty eight residents.

Note the easy route from station platform to the cycle parking.

See also #12299 for a view of the parking at the other side of the station.

12012Photo #12012At long last the severe barriers have been removed. There is plenty of visibility here so there should be no problems. At the far end of this valuable short-cut there is a generous chicane (see #12013) which will deter use by motor cycles.

Well done City Council!

12011Photo #12011A safe place to cycle ?

This isn't the narrowest cycle lane I have ever come across but at 600 mm it is less than handlebar width and less than one third of the recommended width (2.0m).

This is at a 3.6m gap past an island - a gap width clearly identified as being hazardous for cyclists. The presence of this cycle lane exacerbates the problem by saying to drivers that they can happily pass a cyclist through the pinch point providing the cyclist sticks to his lane.

This "facility" breaks every rule in the book and is quite simply DANGEROUS.

How the designers thought it would not be dangerous is beyond me. You would have thought the fact that the cycle logo doesn't fit in the lane would have given them a clue. But no, these extraordinarily narrow cycle lanes are repeated all the way along Newmarket Road.

My advice to anybody cycling down Newmarket Road is to stay out of these lanes and ride as advised in the national standard for cycle training - at pinch points take a central position in the traffic lane to prevent reckless overtaking. Drivers may not like it but tough, your safety is more important than their impatience.

Two strategies for cycling on display here - illegal pavement cycling, or overtaking queueing traffic. The latter is recommended for advanced cyclists.
