35711Photo #35711Bike symbol on Crouch St indicating desire line into the underpass has been moved (see #34314). Not sure why the bike isn't facing the traffic...

The safest approach, and the only one with clear vision of both the pavement and underpass is where a loading bay has been created (see #35710). Most if not all vehicles using this loading bay are vans which don't have windows and therefore make it impossible to see what is the other side of it.

If the loading bay is non-negotiable, then something else must change, and that it seems should be the post box. Moving that obstacle would improve vision, and increase space, where pedestrians and cyclists are to "share". Note also, the post box appears to be used by traders to pile up their rubbish at the end of the day, reducing space further.

Prohibition sign still at entrance to the underpass.

35710Photo #35710Little bike symbols in the gutter (see #34312) along Crouch St have been burned off and replaced by some larger ones, in the centre of the lane.

At this point the symbols were suggesting a desire line that would bring cyclists into conflict with busses using the bus stops just beyond. That is no longer the case, but because of the loading bay on the right, cyclists using the underpass are still expected to make a sharp, unsighted turn into it.

Seems odd that the further of the bike symbols isn't facing directly ahead.

Highway Code Rule 240 (backed up in law)
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Highwaycode/DG_069860
You MUST NOT stop or park on a tram or cycle lane.

This includes being in it just a little bit. Having said that, the design of the cyclepath here falls well short of acceptable. Any car parked in this bay causes danger to cyclists if they stay within the cyclelane as it's in the "door zone", a place where cyclists regularly get knocked off by doors opening without looking, which is also an offense, Highway Code Rule 239 (backed up by the RTA).
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Highwaycode/DG_069860

Notice that I move out of the cyclelane to pass the van and am right on the edge when passing the car.

Finally, notice the SUV directly in front at the lights, towards the end of the clip. Notice that it's front, when it's stopped, is lined up with the pole holding the parking restrictions sign. Then notice exactly how far back the Advance Stop Box starts, at least 2-3metres earlier. Yet another driver ignoring the law about ASLs. All too common.

This is really rubbed in by the many other delivery and/or work vans parked perfectly safely off the path. And the small space left by the van is considered not enough (also by law) and is known by many cyclists as the "door zone", a place where cyclists regularly get knocked off by doors opening without looking, which is also an offense, Highway Code Rule 239 (backed up by the RTA).

And, yes, a cyclist jumps a red light. A small irritation that another decides to bring all cyclists into disrepute (well, in the mind of some rather dull ranters!*). It could be that the cyclist didn't feel safe with the car in the ASL, but probably not.

* In the recent police "crackdown" on irresponsible cyclists they managed to spot 1 every 80 minutes. I see 10 times as many cyclists pass my house every minute. Hardly the terrible illegality that is purported. Whereas in another study, 75% of drivers were spotted speeding in town.

The next car isn't that much better. Then, as I approach the lights to turn left, the car behind me rushes me by pushing up right on my back wheel.

Some classic reasons why this road needs to be 20mph all the way along. Although, sadly, this isn't likely to improve the poor driving behaviour here.

This is the alternate road route to the quiet offroad route provided for cyclists to get into town (as shown towards the end of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UyEPWlIR6i0).

This route takes me just under 3 minutes, compared to the "lovely cycle provision" route that takes over 4 minutes, or longer if held up at the road crossing. So, it's 25% quicker to take this route, I wonder why people don't use the other one?

Not that this route hasn't got issues. The first section is along some of the worst laid out cyclelanes in Cambridge. These lanes take the rider into the deadly door zone of parked cars. I've positioned myself where it's safe, which is entirely out of the cyclelane. What a pointless waste of taxpayers money.

Apart from the traffic offences listed below, this van covers up the (admittedly poor) signage for the cyclepath. You'd have to know it's there to know to use it. Then, it causes a dangerous sideways bunny hop. I'm happy doing this, but I know loads who wouldn't.

Two kinds of road offence going on here.
1. Van parked in the contraflow cyclelane. Breaking Highway Code Rule 240 (backed up in law)
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Highwaycode/DG_069860
You MUST NOT stop or park on a tram or cycle lane

2. The van parked up is breaking Highway Code Rule 242 (backed up in law)
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Highwaycode/DG_069860
You MUST NOT leave your vehicle or trailer in a dangerous position or where it causes any unnecessary obstruction of the road.

But mostly the issue must be that this road needs to have some kind of redesign. Currently it's not safe for vunerable road users.
Cycleway:

35641Photo #35641See clip at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GU00OXfOQb0

Thought I'd try the alternate cyclepath to taking the potentially dangerous road into Cherry Hinton High Street from the north (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GELEhVW8WWQ for dangers).

From this it's quite clear why cyclists don't use this route.
14 seconds, uncleared vegetation.
23 seconds, rubbish chucked up out of pothole strewn acroos route
.. more of this throughout
35 seconds, getting very narrow for a shared path
42 seconds, appalling broken path with poorly cleared vegetation
43 seconds, cycling calming measure*
45 seconds, kerb drop of several inches*
1m12 seconds, roundabout requiring re-admittance onto road, roundly ignored by drivers coming from the left.

All this is essentially saying cycling is a "second class" mode of transport. The *highlighted especially, the traffic calming measures should be a the road to calm cars down in a residential area!

This kind of cycling provision is roundly ignored by cyclists as most people do when they are told "you don't matter as much" and there are alternatives. They will always ignore the route given and stick, well within their rights, to the road. This is an utter waste of tax payers money.

This is a narrow one way road with a contraflow cyclelane.
http://bit.ly/xAiEGv

All kinds of offences going on here.
1. 2 cars parked in the contraflow cyclelane (at 26 seconds). Breaking Highway Code Rule 240 (backed up in law)
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Highwaycode/DG_069860
You MUST NOT stop or park on a tram or cycle lane

2. Cars driving in the contraflow cyclelane (from 27 seconds). Breaking Highway Code Rule 140 (backed up in law)
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Highwaycode/DG_070308
You MUST NOT drive or park in a cycle lane marked by a solid white line

3. The cars above are trying to avoid the lorry parked up for unloading, probably into The Cambridge Corn Exchange (at 28 seconds). Breaking Highway Code Rule 242 (backed up in law)
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Highwaycode/DG_069860
You MUST NOT leave your vehicle or trailer in a dangerous position or where it causes any unnecessary obstruction of the road.

Parkign in a contraflow cyclelane is considered especially dangerous as there's no legal way round by bicycle. This is supposedly looked at seriously by the police.

But mostly the issue must be that this road needs to have some kind of redesign. Currently it's not safe for vunerable road users and, technically, no-one can unload into the Corn Exchange in large vehicles.
