Worst possible provision: pavement cycleway where motor vehicles constantly cross or park on the footway.
Seven dismounts within a distance of 380 yards, here in Harlow. Photograph by David Owen, republished with permission, originally published at www.warringtoncyclecampaign.co.uk
This is where cars often park invading pavement and the mandatory cycle lane on East Rd (Newmarket Rd roundabout), forcing cyclist into the car lane. This bay was designed as a bus stop, not parking.
The infamous East Road layby - the new broken white line has helped but it was quickly worn away and infringements began again - now I see it's been repainted. Maybe it'll last longer this time!
The switch from shared use pavement cycleway to on-street mandatory cycle lane on East Rd (Newmarket Rd roundabout). This part of the Ring Road is an important cycling route, but poorly designed and often obstructed. Signs are confusing and ... [more]
East Road. Cyclists leaving the subway cycleway bypass round the Newmarket Rd roundabout have to stear around street furniture to the dropped kerb, around illegally parked cars - avoiding collision with cars coming from the roundabout.
Victoria Avenue Toucan Crossing 2. The poles on the Midsummer Common (East) side make for a very tight turn onto the shared pavement, often in the face of people coming the opposite way. Unsurprisingly, many people follow the path ta ... [more]
Nice wide shared path either side of Lordswood Road, facing Camulodunum Way. Could do with some "elephant feet" here.
Why is cycling banned on this last section of the path alongside the railway in Bowes Park? Illogical and unhelpful.
A bit of white paint would suffice to create a good link on the Madingley-Bar Hill cycle route.
Paddington Basin - if the surface wasn't loose chippings it'd be useful for cyclists.
The new Avon Way shared pathway is nice and wide but spoiled by the lack of priority over side roads which lead to a dead end. In this case it is a blind corner so progress is very much hampered.
The Chase is a busy cut through from Greenstead Road to St. Andrews Avenue and onto Greenstead. This is the view from it, looking across the busy St. Andrews Avenue. There needs to be a toucan here as it is a very well used crossing and cur ... [more]
Unsigned shared pathway between Harwich Road and Lime Avenue. There is barely enough room for the mother, pram, and dog in the picture. Note also access is via a bus stop.
When it rains the A133 underpass from Boundary Road to Salary Brook is impassable due to flood water. This is the quickest and most direct route to Greenstead from Essex University, and indeed a recommended route on the Greenstead/Salary Br ... [more]
Faced with a flooded underpass (see #20797 and #20798), students will climb the boggy slope to the right, and risk life and limb crossing the busy A133 (see #20799 and #20800).
When it rains the A133 underpass from Salary Brook to Boundary Road is impassable due to flood water. This is the quickest and most direct route to Essex University from Greenstead, and indeed a recommended route on the Greenstead/Salary Br ... [more]
Presumably this is a temporary "bridge" across the bog on Salary Brook, but it has been here for sometime. The missing and broken mesh bares testament to that. It is now a puncture hazard as the metal wires stick up in places.. better off r ... [more]
Where old meets new on the Salary Brook route. Although slightly wider, unfortunately, the new path is of very poor quality, hence it is uneven and already breaking up.
Entrance to Salary Brook from Bromley Road. There is no route sign from the road, and no signs indicating it is a shared path.
This unsigned shared pathway leads to St. Andrews Avenue where cyclists can join the route to Colchester North rail station and Town Centre. The tired old railings are not only ugly but also obstructive.
Finsbury Park bus interchange - one-way cycle route northwards, though a southbound route is needed as well.
A sight common in the United Kingdom: not only is there no priority for the cycleway, but cyclists have to lose momentum and go out of their way to cross this B-road.
Mild cycleway damage on the Barton-Cambridge cycleway, opposite that layby thing just outside the city boundary.
Cyclists are left to guess which way they should go without route signs. The route is in fact to the right (a tight hairpin). This is a most unattractive section, and the white graffiti on the wall to the left greeting people from the ot ... [more]
Are they crazy (again) ? Cyclists supposedly giving way at a field gate just north of Machynlleth Millennium Bridge.
Are they crazy? "Cyclists Dismount' sign at Machynlleth Millennium Bridge (the main commuting route to the Centre for Alternative Technology, among other things).
Newly relayed surface of shared pathway across King's Meadow, done to such a poor standard it floods with rain.
Informal access from Orchard Park development to new cycleway on its south border. A hard surface would be excellent at this location.
Cyclists must dismount to go through this useful subway under Westway. It leads to Colchester Institute and St. Helena School one side, and town centre the other. Allowing cyclists to use it would mean the route (see #19737 and #19738) to t ... [more]
Fairly sensible segregation - but it's spoilt at the far end by cyclists being forced to slalom onto the pedestrian side.
'Cycling Prohibited' - isn't it time this was removed? and a little minor resurfacing wouldn't hurt either.
Cycleway beside the guided busway - but you'd fall off the edge of the platform if you did go this way.
