Gallery: Unnecessary barriers on cycle routes

Engineers love to put barriers on cycle paths. The excuses are myriad - for "safety", to prevent motorcycle access, to keep cows off, to prevent conflict. But it's funny how you never see them across roads, unless they are specifically put there to keep people out. So we know why they are really put on cycle paths.

Barriers have no place on cycle routes. You don't find them in the Netherlands, and there is no excuse for using them here.

Nasty chicane feature obstruction, presumably intended to stop cyclists emerging onto the road.

Chicanes

The absence of No Cycling signs might mean that cycling is not actually prohibited along Bermuda Terrace here, but the pram arms are going to stop most.

Corrie Road/Rustat Road path: pram arms half way along. Probably to be removed (see pavement markings). [These have now been removed see #12010.]

Corrie Road/Rustat Road path: pram arms at Corrie Road end. Probably due for removal (see pavement writing).

Jitty, or snicket onto Rotherwick Way

Pram arms obstructing cycle path. Now removed - see #14162.

Nasty pinch stile

Pram Arms

Very nasty tight gap on a cycle route. Also note the wheelbenders for those who like their bike to be vandalised.

Warwick Road cut-through - showing the very severe chicane and bollards with pram arms.

A superb example of why underpasses are hated, and such a bad solution to crossing a road. Thes obstructions are some of the most severe and hostile for both pedestrians and cyclists in Cambridge. Update March 2020: Fifteen years later t ... [more]

The child needed comforting after cycling into the bollard.

There are no cows around here, so why are these pram arms necessary?

This gap is just wide enough for me to squeeze through with my wide BikeE seat.

I remember this rather cycle unfriendly obstruction from a year ago. As I dismounted to push my bike under the bar some dog walkers looked at me, and I sensed they wanted to tell me I wasn't allowed to cycle along here.

Chicanes like these make an area seem so unpleasant.

Obstructive chicane on the link between St. Alban's Road and White Rose Walk.

Severe chicanes - how are you supposed to get past this?

Unnecessarily severe chicane

Ridiculously punitive chicane

Very odd, a barrier built with a bypass!

Grim - a blocked cycleway. View this scene exactly ten years later: #49966.

You can't get through this pinch-point with panniers!

Stupid bollards

The goal: moving the posts. Acheived a few years later: see #29233.

A pram arm pointing to the right has been left on the cental bollard of this crossing. It is a potential hazard, especially to children's legs ( see photo #9376 ) where they are carried on child seats. The black painted bollards are also a ... [more]

This entrance to Coldham's Common needs to be upgraded. The entrance is currently a swing gate which is extremely diifficult to manage as a cyclist particularly if travelling with a child on the back, as the gate swings dangerously into ... [more]

Tesco chicanes, totally unnecessary. Tesco should be ashamed of themselves. These are arguably not even DDA compliant.

Inadequte provision forces cyclists to break the law. And why are these poles needed?

This is officially a cycle path and a very convenient way to the river Cam. Unfortunately the path is obstructed on both ends.

Unsuitable for most child trailers, especially if left attached to the bike. The barrier has now been removed see #19671.

This crossing needs to be upgraded to a proper toucan and all the guard-railing removed.

This chicane arrangement (on the Tins path route) is poor, and should be replaced with a raised crossing with cycle priority.

About a year after the police agreed to not follow up the fines they'd placed on cyclists for riding through this street - the absent 'no entry' signs are still not in place.

New obstruction for cyclists at Addenbrooke's

I thought an up to date photo of this obstruction might come in useful. The wooden rail to the right has been broken off since the earlier photos on this site. Many people cycle with panniers full of shopping - or carrying carrier b ... [more]

These birds give me the spooks.

Failure of design. This once lovely cycle-path has been spoiled by these chicanes. Any danger that is here is surely due to the parked cars immediately either side of the junction with the road. But that issue hasn't been addressed. See ... [more]
