Gallery: Unnecessary barriers on cycle routes
Engineers love to put barriers on cycle paths. The excuses are myriad - for "safety", to prevent motorcycle access, to keep cows off, to prevent conflict. But it's funny how you never see them across roads, unless they are specifically put there to keep people out. So we know why they are really put on cycle paths.
Barriers have no place on cycle routes. You don't find them in the Netherlands, and there is no excuse for using them here.

The absence of No Cycling signs might mean that cycling is not actually prohibited along Bermuda Terrace here, but the pram arms are going to stop most.

Very nasty tight gap on a cycle route. Also note the wheelbenders for those who like their bike to be vandalised.

I remember this rather cycle unfriendly obstruction from a year ago. As I dismounted to push my bike under the bar some dog walkers looked at me, and I sensed they wanted to tell me I wasn't allowed to cycle along here.

Tesco chicanes, totally unnecessary. Tesco should be ashamed of themselves. These are arguably not even DDA compliant.
This is officially a cycle path and a very convenient way to the river Cam. Unfortunately the path is obstructed on both ends.
Unsuitable for most child trailers, especially if left attached to the bike. The barrier has now been removed see #19671.
This chicane arrangement (on the Tins path route) is poor, and should be replaced with a raised crossing with cycle priority.
About a year after the police agreed to not follow up the fines they'd placed on cyclists for riding through this street - the absent 'no entry' signs are still not in place.

Failure of design. This once lovely cycle-path has been spoiled by these chicanes. Any danger that is here is surely due to the parked cars immediately either side of the junction with the road. But that issue hasn't been addressed. See ... [more]
