Some of the villages around here had surprisingly very high quality pavements along the country roads and quite a few people cycling. I'm told that cycling has been a common means of transport for villagers for over a century. Unsurprising since it's cheap and simple, and probably only became more dangerous when car ownership levels rose in relatively recent history. From Google Streetview it looks like these pavements have been recently renovated, which explains the quality. (Location may be off, since we were just passing through)
