Update - see: #166683. [Image taken 24.3.21] Asda, Layerthorpe, York has cycle parking. But the racks are too close together. On 24.3.21 I decided I would speak to someone about it. The Store Manager immediately came out to speak to me. At that point my bike - with panniers laden with shopping - was leant against the outside of the Sheffield stand nearest the camera. It wouldn't fit between the racks. I explained the issue - I couldn't get my bike in. I took my full panniers off and wheeled it in between the racks as shown in this image. (I also have front panniers so even doing that was a struggle.) I explained it was great the Asda has racks. I explained it was great they were so close to the entrance. I explained this design was called Sheffields and they were good because they provide support for a cycle and the top flat bar offers lots of locking points.
But I also explained the racks are designed to be used by two cycles using both sides. I explained that the current minimum accepted width between racks is 100cm. These were 51cm apart. I explained that squeezing in extra racks reduces the cycle parking not increases it. I explained children don't carry locks so families need to share a space. I explained I couldn't load my shopping and that shopping was what people came to Asda to do. I explained there was no room to load/unload a child from a bike. I said every other rack needed to come out for people to be able to use them and as designed. (I chose not to expand further about the needs of mobility impaired cyclists.) First the chap said, In 15 years you are the first person to mention this. I responded by saying it was replies like that that put people off reporting things. Then he said he saw my point and would ask his maintenance colleague to remove the central rack between the first two of the right row. And monitor it. I asked if he could remove every other one of all of them in that line and monitor that. I dare to hope he will. I said Asda Harrogate (see: #166185, #166186) had done it. See also: #166151
