[Image taken 29.4.21] York hospital, Wigginton Road, York. These Sheffields (cycle parking design) are near the main entrance. Tick. They are easy to find. Tick. They are in corridor busy with human traffic. Tick. They have a lot of natural surveillance. Tick. They are in a small group which means there is oversight of who is using/doing what to the cycles. Tick. They are the toastrack design ie linked by horizontal rails (almost always a cross - but see: #165413). I don't like the round-topped designs - bar is not flat so offers fewer locking options (cross), reduced length of bar for support (cross). There is (a) an end of cycle route and (b) a cyclists dismount sign (cross, cross). Why could the zebra not be a parallel crossing ie so people on cycles could continue over? Why is the dismount sign just where many people will have done just this (and secured their cycle) or just where people may getting onto their cycles? I don't know enough about the movement patterns here but the signs don't seem to be helpful and definitely add to the general sign clutter (cross). You can see a metal bollard that obstructs entry to/exit from the racks (cross) see also: #167922, #167924) I wonder if a map of the site for people on cycles including showing additional cycle parking locations would be possible here. Given the purpose of the site there will be people using all designs of cycles. I would hope there would be a variety of stands including for longer and wider designs of cycle and for, say, a family sharing a rack/lock(s). The map could show where flexible spaces were and the number. For other images of these racks from today see: #167919, #167920, #167921.
