[NOTE: No streetview at this exact location.] Sustrans' Cycling for everyone, A guide for inclusive cycling in cities and towns (www.sustrans.org.uk/media/7377/cycling_for_everyone-sustrans-arup.pdf) says: "All urban design, including cycling, is not neutral, it either perpetuates or reduces social inequity." At some point since 25.9.21 (see: #174516) not only have railings been reinstalled but they extend further to the left. As I was taking the photo, someone who said she was a local resident came from the left but had to walk around to the only gap now left - far right in this image. She said, "The railway put them in to make it safer for children." I would argue it's less safe. For all users. Now everyone coming from or going to the underpass under the York-Scarborough line (see: #173997) is 'kettled' in the space I am standing to take the photo. This means people who had been able to enter from or exit to Longfield Terrace or Sycamore Place through at their end, now, like the person who spoke to me, have to walk in the road around the railings and add to the crush of people coming through the underpass but also crossing from the alley that links this route with Queen Anne's Road (including many pupils at St Peter's School) and people on cycles - including heavier, longer and wider designs (what I call 'York'cycles) some e-assist but not all such as: #170277, #168885, and scooters wanting to turn into here from Bootham Terrace amay have to wait on the road until there is space in gap between the railings and the underpass or until there is room to pass through the underpass. I am unable to signal that I am slowing and stopping as I approach. It is too steep, it is a left turn, and anyway even if I had a third arm does anyone still know the ‘slowing down’ signal I learned to give while flapping my right arm up and down? I have to trust that everyone behind me is paying attention and is going at a speed at which they can stop if I have to. And any cyclist behind me has to trust that the person behind them can and still stop. In all weathers and levels of light and despite the gradient and the lack of sight lines. I don’t trust other road users to be ready and able to stop but I need to do so to check what is happening between the road and the other end of the underpass. The railings only work for motorists. They keep 'people' penned and limit choice without making this key crossing safer or improving it in any way. So they perpetuate social inequity. See also: #174511, #174513 and links.
