[UPDATE: New image: #174712.] UPDATED CAPTION this image: 9.10.21. (See also updated caption: #174554) This stretch of Navigation Road remains two-way for motor traffic as far as the new layout immediately to the right of this image. This means drivers entering from Foss Islands Road (at the far end of the road in the image) may: park on the left, and, access the properties on the right and behind the camera. BUT drivers who had been able to access this point/the parking/these properties from the right are no longer able to do so (see: #174713). The aim is to stop rat running. However, an unforeseen effect is that some drivers coming from Foss Islands Road ie behind the cyclist are moving very fast: at speeds I had not experienced/witnessed here. Perhaps feeling 'safe in the knowledge' no drivers will be coming round the corner towards them. This means this stretch of Navigation Road will be more not less difficult and stressful for people on cycles to use. Drivers from the direction of the camera heading for Foss Islands Road rarely (ever?) gave way to cyclists in the oncoming lane (where the cyclist in the image is) despite the permanent obstruction of parked vehicles. Further, when I have been in the position the cyclist in the image is in, I have been hooted at, shouted at and tailgated by drivers who wanted me to get out of their way. From what I saw while watching for an hour on 8.10.21 (daylight, clear visibility) this short stretch of the road network will be even more intimidating and uninviting to people who already cycle and those who would like to/could. And it doesn't help that the road surface is pitted to the extent I need to look down and pick my way when I (all road users) need to be looking around them. [Image taken 29.9.21] Navigation Road, York. A rare view - just a cyclist. Many drivers are aggressive between this point (Hungate) and Foss Islands Road. No matter the permanently parked motor vehicles on the left or the very rough road surface, drivers rarely give way for cyclists heading towards the camera and others try to overtake people riding where he is. I've been hooted and shouted at. It’s a key link for people on cycles but in my experience it is rarely incident-free. Context see: #174548 and links
