[MY EXPERIENCE: Tuesday 14.3.23 My journey from here: #192083 to my home is 2.7km. 0.7km of that is motor traffic-free. Yet in the remaining 2km on the quietest - residential streets - I was subjected to bad driving. There was another (female) cyclist ahead of me when we emerged from the underpass see: #190591. Yet a driver managed to slip between us. The driver of a small (car-height) van with what looked liked silvered out rear windows passed me here using the parking bays. But had to wait behind that other cyclist at the top. And pumping fumes into my lungs. Then, on Filey Terrace a driver came fast from Ratcliffe Street and straight at me. The obstacles were on his side - parked vehicles. There were several gaps including one of at least two car lengths between them. Yet the driver neither slowed down, moved towards the cars/gaps to give me room nor moved into a gap to cede the route to me. This is on routes I know well and can and so ride assertively on. I was, as I always do, taking the lane on Bootham Terrace, for example. York Cycle Campaign (yorkcyclecampaign.bike/) has found the number of people cycling in this city has plummeted: yorkcyclecampaign.bike/2021/08/27/cycling-numbers-decline/ These two encounters with dangerous and intimidating drivers in 2km plus designs like this: #176775, from March 2020; #187753 from October 2022, and #191027, from February 2023, it's not surprising I cycle around 1/10 or fewer of journeys/distance I used to.]
[Image taken 18.10.21] Bootham Terrace, York. Today a driver overtook me using the parking spaces to the right. I was battling uphill in the rain. This was a new but further example of the impatient and intimidating behaviour of drivers here. Yet the street is only 200m long (see: #175094) and is access only: #171139. Other image today: #175093.
