[Image taken 22.1.22] Grosvenor Terrace, York. I have long meant to do a count here. There are always more people on foot and cycles than in motor vehicles. Yet we all have to get out of their way... pedestrians ducking into gaps between parked vehicles, cyclists being tailgated and feeling pressured to go faster or to stop and let the motorist through - despite this being a residential area, not a through road (unless the driver is rat-running and avoiding Bootham/Burton Stone Lane). The pavements are narrow - you can only walk single file. Not conducive to moving sociably. Not a great way to get kids into walking. Most people walk in the road until bullied out of it by a motorist. It is one way (from Bootham, right to left). I would like to see it two-way for people on cycles and in mobility scooters/wheelchairs. People in the latter category use it contraflow already. As do many people on cycles. (The alternative is unpleasant: uphill; with speed cushions that are difficult to negotiate on a cycle but do not slow motorist speeds; drivers heading downhill who for have no understanding of or tolerance for people on cycles moving in the other direction.)

Saturday, 22.2.22. 75 minutes between 14.30 and 15.45. Pedestrians: 162, motor vehicles: 17, cyclists withflow: 4, cyclists contraflow: 4.
NOTES: I counted each child in a buggy as a pedestrian. In short, 170 active travellers ie around two/minute, one motor vehicle every 4.5 minutes. Seemingly a wide range of ages. A lot of people with dogs. The only reason for counting today and at this time was that a) the students are around; b) I was passing, had the tally counter and chalk with me, c) it was dry; d) it was milder than earlier in the week. Had I started and finished later I think the numbers of active travellers would have been higher... People returning home from the town centre or riverside walks as the light failed and the temperature dropped, others heading out to bars and restaurants, and people starting to deliver takeaways evening meals by cycle. A further impetus for finally doing a count of sorts is the decision for (motor traffic) calming measures coming to Burton Stone Lane (yorkmix.com/new-measures-to-slow-traffic-on-a-street-in-york-approved/). I am concerned that only one part of that road was considered and not Burton Stone Lane (BSL) in its entirety. I am also concerned hat the changes will increase rat-running (aided by sat navs) in the streetsbounded by the York-Scarborough rail line ie between Grosvenor Terrace and BSL (see: #183230). I think changes planned for a currently closed takeaway will increase speeds of motor traffic including of vehicles delivering takeaways...
