[Image taken 25.1.22] Blake Street, York. This man’s cycle has permanent panniers. (That makes it a ‘York’cycle – set up for utility use.) He has a typical chap’s shape – no bum, no tum, and the widest part of him is his shoulders and these are not only parallel to the racks but well above all the clutter at that level. Yet space is tight. If he were to need to load the far pannier he’d need to pull the cycle towards him – and then space would be too tight. Note also where his feet are – one is on the 2cm high linking rail. He’s wearing robust flat-soled shoes. These rails are not practical or safe for flimsier/more stylish/higher-soled or higher-heeled footwear. You shouldn’t have to choose where you park based on what you are wearing.
