[Image taken on 24.3.22] Black Swan, Peasholme Green, York. Racks need space not only for the cycle to be physically stationed but also to move it in and out of the space (see: #174744, #167784). And because you load a cycle from the side: #177859, including large items onto the rack: #84960; and children on and off: #178200. Plus people with mobility issues may need more space to get on/off and it may be an adult with mobility issues or a disability who is being carried on a cycle. Or a group may share locks (see: #177115). More space ahead of the racks, behind the racks and between the uprights increase accessibility and mean more people can use them. You need cycle parking for people to cycle. The easier it is to use the greater the chances of someone using this form of active travel. I also believe York needs to urgently think about cargo cycle parking provision. See example from Oldenburg, Germany: #180449. [The photographer said: "These cargo bike stands are at the city council's Technisches Rathaus. Oldenburg has been subsidising cargo bikes and they are very popular."] And, in York, what about recharging facilities? That will suit locals and tourists? Context and links here today: #180475.
