Bollards are used to protect routes closed to motor traffic but open to active modes (cycling, walking, wheelchairing…) All too often motorists see them as denoting a dead end and assume there is no issue with parking at them (see: #170523). This is one of many reasons I believe drivers should have to resit the driving test every five years: so they learn about signage that has been introduced and ideology that has become the accepted way of thinking since the previous time they proved they were safe to use the roads. The Government wants "Cycling and walking [to] be the natural first choice for many journeys with half of all journeys in towns and cities being cycled or walked by 2030... ...Because the potential benefits are huge" (assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/904146/gear-change-a-bold-vision-for-cycling-and-walking.pdf). Such journeys are made in urban areas. Local authorities should be leading the way to ensure it is possible, realistic, safe (including from air pollution) and attractive to move around actively.
