[UPDATE: The street calming measures: #187753] [Image taken on 5.5.22] Burton Stone Lane junction with Grosvenor Road-Avenue Road, York. Burton Stone Lane (BSLa) is a north-south route through residential areas (with more to come: #182417). I took these images ahead of change to this end of the street: democracy.york.gov.uk/%28S%28aw2b23jofoyuejfc1asnl055%29%29/documents/s155522/Burton%20Stone%20Lane%20Report.pdf and democracy.york.gov.uk/ieListDocuments.aspx The carriageway is narrow yet is used by the giant vehicles that deliver to the Heron and Sainsbury's Local supermarkets on BSLa; buses, including services that get diverted along here when the parallel Gillygate (the other side of the York-Scarborough rail line) is closed; taxi drivers and other motorists, most of whom seem to be in a hurry and who neither respect the speed limit (20mph), are inhibited by the four sets of speed cushions, nor notice or are concerned the pavements are very narrow in places so their vehicles get uncomfortably close to people on the pavements and put them at risk of being hit by wing mirrors. The speed cushions are ineffective at slowing motor traffic speeds but very effective at making this route unpleasant and unsafe feeling to cycle. The image tries to illustrate the narrowness of the carriageway and how the position of the speed cushions means motor vehicles can straddle them while for people on cycles they are obstacles. For trike users I believe they would be a barrier – you cannot avoid them so would be at risk of overturning. This route is very unpleasant due to speeds, the speed cushions, the stench of fuel from motor vehicles. (Reminder: the Government wants most short journeys to be made by active modes by 2030 https://cyclingindustry.news/transport-secretary-half-of-urban-journeys-must-be-cycled-or-walked-by-2030/.) I took this images and others here today ahead of planned changes to the layout: yorkmix.com/new-measures-to-slow-traffic-on-a-street-in-york-approved/ However, they retain a speed cushion despite Government advice to the contrary (Cycle Infrastructure Design LTN 1/20 paragraph 7.6.8 assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/951074/cycle-infrastructure-design-ltn-1-20.pdf). Plus there seems to have been no consideration or concern that the motorists, including City of York Council-registered taxi drivers, who do not currently comply with the 20mph or lower limit along here or reduce their speed when warned they are exceeding it (see: #182425) will choose other routes through the area (see: #183230) to avoid measures that may add seconds to their journey length or require them to reduce speed.
