[UPDATE: see #185140.] [Image taken 21.5.22] Terry Avenue, York. [NOTE: No streetview at this location] The traffic-free Terry Avenue reverted to a route for motor traffic for a year during floodworks. The children in the dark background left, one on a bike and one on foot, are banished to the uneven dark narrow footpath during the closure. When Terry Ave reopens they will be able to ride, run, walk on the main drag. The lane is too narrow for motor vehicles to pass so passing spaces were constructed. I suggested these be retained after the end of the works. I see them as spaces people can stop and chat with people they meet here purposely or serendipitously. It seems this is what will happen. My first suggestion for a name was ‘Passing the time of day places’. A snappier second try is: ‘Catchup corners’. This riffs on children often moving faster than their parents so they can wait here, out of the flow, for the adults to catch them up.
