[Image taken 8.2.23] York Minster, Minster Yard, York. York Minster (yorkminster.org/) is undergoing works (yorkminster.org/discover/conservation/). The walls of the temporary structures – Portakabins (Portakabin is a local company www.portakabin.com/) have the effect of hoardings. The sides are made attractive and, critically in my view, York-specific. The positive imagery hides the bland walls but also draws attention to what you can’t see – the interiors of the Minster. I do think though that there’s missing information here and on the panels at the other end of the Minster. I think it needs large scale details of what’s planned, the timeline, how people can follow progress, how people can get involved and, critically according to the website - donate. I cycle through Minster Yard several times a week. Yet I do not know what refurbishment is taking place here. There is nothing telling me or not that I have seen so not at a scale that would get my attention and draw me in. Not even QR codes for people to be able to see what's happening and what's planned. The exemplars are still: York St John: #165294 (and links) and English Heritage: #164606 (and links). Other images of the Portakabins today: #190897, #190898, #190899. Other image today and links: #190884.
