[Image taken 20.2.23] Crichton Avenue (close to the junction with Wigginton Road), York. Just 260cm wide this route is shared with all varieties of non motorised users. The cyclist heading downhill is often very close to the kerb. At night this feels particularly intimidating. You may be very close to the motor vehicles due to other NMUs. The drivers are often moving at speed plus you are blinded by their lights coming up into your eyes.
I believe CYC needs to work up a scheme - precipitated by the planning application approved 17.2.23 for Denning's Yard access (see: #187856) - that gets people off Crichton Avenue after this point (ie after the railway) and down to the Foss Islands Path on a new, much less steep, much, much, much wider shared use route that joins/crosses the FIP where the route is flat. This would make the route a great deal more inclusive. (Increasing numbers of people are excluded and this will only get worse as more people from perhaps five developments in addition to the residents of the nine properties planned for Denning's Yard want to use it and, when the physical barriers are removed from parts of the cycle network, e-cargo cycles will become as ubiquitous here as elsewhere in the city/the country.) It would build in capacity for future growth. It would reduce the conflict between too many users of different needs/expectations using a route that is outdated and does not meet even minimum standards. Other images today and links: #191249.
