[Image created 8.3.23] Crichton Avenue - Wigginton Road - Foss Islands Path - Denning's Yard Access, York. Context: #191338. If you take a drone view from above there is much space - albeit at very varied heights - at present. Plus, I hope my image shows the sense of taking people between Crichton Avenue and routes north (New Earswick, Haxby, Wigginton) along the yellow route (the pedestrian crossings will need changing to toucans, the footpaths widened and redesignated as shared with people on cycles) and not, as present, requiring them to use the Foss Islands Path this side of Wigginton Road (see: #191863). The light blue line is the existing shared use route on Crichton Avenue but I think fewer cyclists will need to use it as some can cross earlier to the northern side and join the yellow route. This should reduce congestion and conflict. The green circle is my interpretation of how you might get people from a high level to a lower one with a gentle gradient such that (ideally no-one) needs to get off a cycle and push. There will need to be 'catch your breath' spaces for all users along the spiral. Steps should be provided for faster access for those who can use them. (It looks as if there is an existing option in Acton, London see: #191923.) The thick green line is the new access to/from the Foss Islands Path. It's wide to accommodate all non-motorised users, to provide practical and comfortable turning circles for wheelchair/mobility scooter users, people with wide buggies and people on cycles - some of which will be long due to the design or because they will have a trailer attached. It is also set far far back from the junction of Wigginton Road. Motor vehicles turning into Denning's Yard access have a long 'reservoir' before they reach the point where the non motorised users (there can be 300 in one hour as children are going to school) cross. This will increase visibility for all users of all users. The thinner green line is the Foss Islands Path. It needs to be wider but with the new yellow route providing an alternative more direct, more level, option for people heading north/coming from the north - there should be fewer users. The purple line is an improved link for all non motorised users from between Crichton Ave/Foss Islands Path and Wigginton Road. The entry from Wigginton Road needs to be much wider, the path needs to be much wider and the angle of the incline much much less steep. There is space to do this. The pink line is what I call the Wigginton Road Link. It's already shared use but it's too narrow. Far too narrow. Plus it goes through a very narrow cutting in an earth bank. This short stretch is very steep and has no sightlines. Plus, because the design provides a ledge, people sit here and/or convene here and/or use the surface for other practices which may include antisocial activities.
