[Image taken 12.5.23] Denning's Yard Access (between Crichton Avenue and Foss Islands Path/Wigginton Road, York
COUNT RESULT: 275
Count time: 07.41 to 08.41.
Conditions: Overcast, fresh breeze.
Observations: A wheelchair user, a mobility scooter user, a TIER scooter rider, a cycle pulling a trailer, a Tern and two Babboes. Young people cycling and walking to Huntington School (www.huntingtonschool.co.uk/), on their own or with other pupils; adults accompanying children (walking, cycling independently), in pushchairs, on
cargo cycles, on child seats) to Bootham (Junior) School (www.boothamschool.com/junior-school/) Clifton Green Primary School (www.cliftongreenprimary.co.uk/), Haxby Road Primary Academy (hrprimary.co.uk/). (I didn't ask everyone so people may have been heading to other educational settings too.)
Different to previous counts was the number of people who joined the carriageway from the shared use off road route over Crichton Avenue road bridge... and stayed on the carriageway to cross the junction into Wigginton Road southbound. Not lots, but a noticeable number. Ditto several people on cycles (pupils, plus adult riders) crossed from the south side shared use route over Crichton Avenue road bridge (from left to right in the photo) to reach the pavement southbound. I couldn't see if they stayed on the pavement and cycled on it, or if they got off and pushed, or if they cut across onto the carriageway or onto the pavement on the other side to continue their southbound journey.
I was doing a count ahead of meeting the all-new contingent of Guildhall Ward Councillors (democracy.york.gov.uk/mgMemberIndex.aspx) tomorrow. (There were local elections on Thursday, 4 May 2023 www.york.gov.uk/ElectionResults2023.)
In March 2023, planning permission was granted for 9 residential properties here. With the current layout, I cannot see how the junction will be safe, safe-feeling, convenient... for non-motorised users (NMUs) now. Let alone when (as predicted) the Local Transport Plan delivers a 20 per cent increase in active travel, plus people move into the new developments close by. Previous count results: #170962.
