[Image taken 13.9.23] Denning’s Yard Access (between Crichton Avenue and Wigginton Road/Foss Islands Path), York. There is now fencing and gates on the edge of the construction area. Early report in local press about the site: www.yorkpress.co.uk/news/19320183.nine-homes-planned-former-scrapyard-off-wigginton-road/) There is a sign telling people it is a construction site: #197476.
Today, two weeks into the new school term I did a count.
Count time: 07.47 to 08.46.
Conditions: Sunny, chilly/fresh.
Observations:
One (from Foss Islands, so uphill, seemingly no e-assist) Babboe with three children onboard; 1 Tier hire cycle; 1 Brompton with a child seat (and perhaps reinforced frame); 1 trailer; 2 Terns, 1 follow-me-style arrangement; several children on clearly brand new cycles; 1 very young child fell off (on Crichton Ave just before Denning's Yard Access, downhill) which shows the importance of motor traffic-free routes and the difficulty of using this one; 1 child riding ahead of an adult male, exiting Foss Islands Way spiral, called out "Clear" but I don't think he'd have looked sufficiently far left to see any road user starting from the lights/approaching from further into Denning's Yard. Neither he nor his father (anyone) can see vehicles approaching from Wigginton Road south, and I'm not convinced either of them could have stopped had a motor vehicle been approaching. Two family groups did stop before crossing (on Crichton Avenue ie downhill). I spoke to a male carrying his son's cycle after dropping his child off at school. He said he does look and knows to look as he has been living in the area for 10 years and has seen drivers parking here, ditto the skips positioned further into the site.
One Babboe rider used the carriageway from Crichton Avenue to Wigginton Road. The frequent fouling of the ASL at that junction would make this difficult/impossible. The fouling of the junction (southbound, into town/towards the hospital) would add difficulty, danger and fumes. I'd have liked to have been able to ask the rider why she chose that route. Perhaps due to the difficulty of using the Foss Islands Spiral? (No sight lines, very steep, very narrow, noticeable camber, slippery at many times of the year.)
COUNT RESULT: 366.
Denning's Yard Access - my overview and links to previous counts: #170962.
Planning application is 21_01154_FUL-APPROVED-2567852.pdf. However I am unable to find anything relating to this application on the CYC planning portal.
