These racks are located in St. George's Square, which is on Guildhall Street. They were installed as part of a Cycle Parking experiment in 2001. They are part of a row of cycle racks in which 16 cycle parking spaces replaced 12 wheelbender spaces. You can see how the up /down or high/low arrangement enables the handlebars to interlock. This has the advantage of being able to pack more bikes in, but at the cost of some awkwardness at getting the bikes in and out. This first batch were installed at 750mm centres, as a result of this experiement further racks (e.g those at junction of Lion Yard and St Andrews St, #2871) were installed at 830mm centres which makes them much more usuable. The bikes can be secured fairly easily to the ring at the top of the racks. The bikes are racked neatly and don't tend to fall over.
