Ridgeway branches. Asphalt is 'interim surfacing' while 'tar spray and chip' is final surfacing on right. This branch of the path has been swept, so loose gravel is actually relatively rare now. It's not as smooth as asphalt but workable. Hard to see what advantages that tar spray & chip has though. There's puddles forming on its surface, so that's not a help.
