Perne Rd Toucan crossing. Note position of all posts kept well clear of the cycle track.
The wait at this crossing tends to be very long and there is no automatic detection of cyclists. In contrast, a cyclist approaching down Burnside or Mill Rd and remaining in the road will be detected automatically. As a result, many prefer to remain in the road rather than use this crossing.
This crossing was one of the case studies in TRL report no 47, used in preparation for DfT Traffic advisory leaflet 10/93.
This crossing has nearside and farside indicators.
