Confusing cycle route sign as the station is to the right.

An except cycles is needed for this 'No Left Turn' sign.

Quite a forest of signs - and one more is needed: an 'Except cyclists' subpanel under the no right turn.

Cycle route signage to Audley End (but not the station?) and Saffron Walden [the cycle route to the station is behind the camera]

Unnecessarily narrow access to Wenden Road - and there's confusion about the dropped kerb - see #70360.

No dropped kerb to access the shared use section of this junction. See also #70360.

This bit of the junction has a dropped kerb and is marked as shared use. But the other end does not have any dropped kerb, see #70361.

Saffron Walden end of Wenden Road where this is now no entry for motor vehicles, with a contraflow cycle lane.

Very faded dirty pedestrian sign which reads: Audley End House Pedestrians

'National Speed Limit' signs which suggest the limit is 60mph for this type of road, yet there's a 50mph roundal.

Footway widened at same time as the Wenden Road traffic calming scheme. Not clear whether it is now shared use. The cycle route sign which is annoying just out of shot at top right can be seen in #70354 and points straight on to Saffron … [more]

Wenden Road

We spoke to these two pedestrians who told us that they had been looking forward to the changes on Wenden Road, but had been very disappointed what has been done so far. "How many cups of tea did it take to make these changes?" They told us … [more]

This big tractor thundered along Wenden Road at a fair lick. The size of these vehicles has constrained the opportunities for traffic calming. There's no footway on this half mile stretch.

Now that some limited traffic calming has been applied to Wenden Road can we look forward to more scenes like this?

An Access Walden campaigner tries to explain the strange logic of Essex County Councils safety audits which at first suggested a build out here, but then a further audit had them removed. The contents of the safety audits were kept secret … [more]

Wenden Road - proof that the footway is not up to the job. The contra-flow cycleway takes up almost all of one carriageway.

Despite the recent changes after four and a half years of campaigning there is still no footway for half a mile here. The road is still 60mph (or whatver anyone thinks is the national speed limit for this type of road). The measures along … [more]

Walden Road - the end of the one way for motor traffic and contraflow cycle lane.

Access Walden campaigners walking Wendon Road to mark the launch of the changes. This section is one way for motor traffic with a solid line contraflow for cyclists. The burnt out markings of bicycles are evidence of the lack of experience … [more]

People of Saffron Walden celebrating the changes to Wenden Road - after 4.5 years of lobbying. This stretch of the road is now a one way with a cycle contraflow.

The point where the 'national speed limit' road becomes 30mph and where cyclists and walkers from were gathering to mark this stage of the campaign to make Wendon Road safer for those groups.

Road markings burned out where there was briefly a build out. Apparently it was removed after a stage three safety audit. Note on the right hand side the edge of the carriageway has been patched with a strip. The beware cyclists sign … [more]

Priority facing the chicane. This is a 60 mph road and there is no footway here. On a bike coming through here how can I trust that oncoming traffic will give me right of way at this pinch point? They have to make a judgment to wait for me … [more]

Chicanes introduced to slow motor traffic. When I was cycling back the other way a car did slow and give way to me here, although the driver did hesitate a bit as if deciding whether to go for it. I gave him a cheery wave and the people in … [more]
