National Cycle Route 45 - the alternative is a dangerous dual carriageway. Why this former railway can't be given a surface is beyond me. This locks people out of active travel. https://t.co/8AZIRax7O5 [approximate location]

Negotiating the path down from Cumbernauld Road to join the Strathkelvin Railway Path. Still as narrow and awkward as ever.

The railway path into East Kilbride, NCN756, with a sign for "Primary Schools" off to the left.

Clear signage for destinations along NCN756, but none for some of the paths off to the side. Highfield Place's turn-off.

The railway path into East Kilbride, part of NCN756.

NCN756 turns left to leave the railway path alignment, while the cycle route to Blantyre and Hamilton starts, but is only signed as going to East Mains. There's a sign for Hamilton up on Wilson Place.

The cycle route from Blantyre joins NCN756. The railway path has now been properly surfaced.

The Loch Lomond railway path used to carry on here, but now flats block the route as well as the expanded car showroom that initially took over some of the land. NCN7 continues along the footway across South Street to the right.

Different styles of sign on the Primrose Street off-ramp from the Loch Lomond railway path.

The Balmoral Street off-ramp from the Loch Lomond railway path. The first time I've seen a postal district on a cycle route sign.

What looks like a nice straight through alignment is spoilt by dropped kerbs in the wrong place (see #91229) and the path beyond the road being narrowed and not asphalted (see #91163).

The railway path leaves Winston Road on a rather steep ramp.

I don't know why this path wasn't made wider, placed further away from the fence, and asphalted. Too narrow to pass anyone without that person stepping aside.

Old Station Platform Old platform of the former Dawley & Stirchley station now on a footpath which is part of the "Silkin Way" a long distance foot/cycle path that runs for some 14 miles from North of Telford across the town and down to ... [more]

Avant garde railing at Pollock Avenue road crossing. The traffic here is fast, but no signalised crossing has been provided. The path ahead is on the course of an old railway line to Peacock Cross.

The end of the path from Burnbank, near Peacock Cross. Could do with some dropped kerbs.

Saturday Traffic On The Bristol and Bath Cycle Path

A sign I almost missed at the start of the railway path between Yarmouth and Freshwater.

The railway path near Merstone, with the off-ramp for the Sunshine Trail towards Wroxall.

Path along former railway line between Shanklin and Wroxall.

Cycle parking next to a bridge on the cycle path. This might be better positioned near the shops or round the front of the pub.

Barriers at the end of the path where it meets a very minor road

A rather pointless gate across part of the path. Surely a drop-bollard would do.

"Alternative Route"

Use the bridge on the left, unless you're a train!

A warning about crossing the golf course

The railway path from Bushmills to Giants Causeway, with a close-up view of the trains on operating days!

The start of the railway path from Bushmills to Giants Causeway

Path junction where the Roseburn Path (see #59015) splits into the Blackhall Path and the Telford Path. Another path crosses these, and Give Way markings have been put on the main paths.

Rumble strips on the approach to a path junction and crossings (see #59016)

Exit for Neston, but also for connection to NCN568 to the Welsh Border

This gate easy to get around without hindering path users too much, but enough to slow users down at road crossing

A barrier across the cycle path at Cubbins Green. However, a good point is the parallel segregated horse-riding path across the fence from the cycle path.

The least-worst bit of the Sandy Lane cycle path access

The Addiscombe Railway Path

Tight corner at the bottom of the ramp down to Blackhorse Lane tramstop and the Addiscombe Railway Path

The ramp down to Blackhorse Lane tramstop (on the right) and the Addiscombe Railway Path (on the left). Both have shortcut steps so pedestrians don't have to walk the long way round.

Another barrier on the railway path in Livingston

Joggers don't like barriers either!

Back on NCN7 Location: near Gartness (Scotland, United Kingdom) It was just over two years ago in June 2009, when I last cycled along this stretch of NCN7 albeit that I was going the other way, en route from Balloch to Pitlochry.

Gates at road crossing in Croftamie. The other ends of the paths are open, and the surface on the cyclepath is a bit rough, roads somewhat smoother.

The surface of the railway path section of NCN 756 in East Kilbride has still not been upgraded. UPDATE: The railway path has since been asphalted, see #108031.
