Personally, I'd choose the shared-use footways over the roadway any day! This was the only photo I took at this location where the '(50)/Slow Down' electronic signs weren't lit (see also #53677).
The 20mph sign is flashing but motorists are still driving fast enough to set off the electronic 30mph "Slow Down" sign!
